RAS: A responsible choice that starts with the fiber

For us, creating a yarn means starting from the raw material. From its quality, of course, but increasingly from its origin and the journey it takes before reaching our collections.

Alpaca is a fiber we use in many of our knitting yarns, chosen for its softness, lightness, and ability to create fluffy, voluminous surfaces that are pleasant to the touch. This is precisely why we believe it is essential to complement our aesthetic and technical research with greater attention to the fiber’s origin and traceability.

The RAS – Responsible Alpaca Standard certification represents a concrete commitment in this direction for Industria Italiana Filati. It aligns with the path we have been pursuing for some time through the choice of certified raw materials and internationally recognized standards.

What is the RAS certification?

RAS – Responsible Alpaca Standard is an international standard developed by Textile Exchange to promote responsible practices in the alpaca supply chain.

The standard covers several key aspects: animal welfare, responsible land management, and social and labor conditions, pairing these principles with a robust fiber traceability system throughout the supply chain. The goal is to make the raw material’s journey more transparent, from the farm to subsequent processing stages, through clear and verifiable criteria.

From fiber to yarn

A certified fiber enters our creative process and turns into something new: a brushed and lightweight yarn, a soft volume, a mélange, a tactile surface, or a more sophisticated structure.

Creativity, technology, experience, and raw material selection remain at the core of our work, but they can coexist with a deeper focus on the history and origin of the fibers we choose. It is an approach that applies to alpaca, but is part of a broader vision: building collections where research and responsibility move forward in the same direction.

Certification does not replace product research. It accompanies it.
